Sash Windows
Sash Windows
There are many processes that can be done to an existing sash window to bring it back to its former glory and to meet the architects specifications. This can be anywhere between a simple refurbishment to a complete replacement. We are experts and can advise you with your project be it a single window or several hundred windows in need of restoration.
Here is a small list of the many processes we can do to help you bring back your sash windows to their former glory:
- Paint removal – in most cases, the paint needs to be stripped back to bare timber. We can also do a partial strip with scrapers to remove the loose and flakey paint, or by the use of temperature controlled hot air blowers. The sash window maybe dismantled before or after the paint removal process. The individual components (sashes) can then be worked on the bench.
- Refurbishing the window – once dismantled the individual components can be refurbished. This includes the rebalancing of the weights, replacement of the existing glass and splicing of
new timber where there are signs of rot. We can also at this point focus on the window frames. Again this gives us a chance to do any splicing and resin repairs where necessary. - New Ironmongery and Weights – we can fit new weights, sash cords, latches, locks, pulleys and other ironmongery.
- Reassemble – when we reassemble the sash window we can upgrade the parting beads and the staff beads that are both fitted with a brush strip for a thermal upgrade.
- Filling and prime the bare timber – we would do a final fill and prime paint ready for the follow on trades.
If properly maintained, a sash window can last for several hundred years. We have seen sash windows dating all the way back to the Georgian period.
Sash windows form the core of our business and we believe this is our expertise. When we’re not restoring windows, we have also offered training courses on behalf of the Landmark Trust.
