New & Replica Timber Doors
In Britain, there are millions of beautiful original timber doors created by generations of crafts people. These skills have been handed down, not only in creating, but in restoring them. We come across many projects with doors in various states of disrepair and have worked on full restorations. This is a complex, but fulfilling part of our business.
Often, we find doors which are too badly damaged to warrant repair and therefore need a replacement. This is our process:
- Taking a profile – most doors will have various moulding incorporated into their design. This can be located in the centre of a panel, carvings or unique beaded edges. We will take photos and cut small samples from which replacement pieces can be carved / created on a machine.
- Restoration without sample – In some cases, there may be no door left from which to take a sample. In these situations, old photographs and other examples in the same building will have to be used. We do our best to authentically replicate what might have been there historically.
- Sourcing timber – although it might not seem important, we feel that finding the correct species of timber is relevant. With years of experience, we know how to identify various different types of timber.
- Workshop production – we have a wide range of tools in our workshop which allow us to create many complex door designs.
- Ironmongery – we have access to a wide range of original and reproduction ironmongery such as door knockers, hinges, clasps and locks. If the existing ironmongery is still available, we can clean it using a process of vapour honing to bring back the original surfaces.
